On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
