Delhi Wakes Up to Toxic Haze After Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "severe" category.
Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements
Various sections of the city showed an pollution measurement over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe threshold set by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy levels.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Changes
Since 2020, authorities had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that covers the capital as winter approaches.
Yet earlier this year, the newly elected regional administration petitioned the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Court Ruling and Implementation
Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, judges approved the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited hours throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout Delhi registered pollution spiking around midnight to some of the worst measurements recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Implications
The proliferation of fireworks during the celebrations also sparked a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the events.
Persistent Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.
Near the festival period, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the worst records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Multiple Contamination Sources
The situation in the city is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of Punjab and Haryana.
In these regions, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.
Health and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million residents living in the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple research.
This pollution causes high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can result in malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be causing ten thousand early fatalities each year in the capital.
