An Historic Milestone when Liam Rosenior Transcends Boundaries

"He is an excellent tactician that understands the game back to front, which is the crucial factor.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering black player, it would be dishonest to claim this moment fails to move me."

Those are the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who made his historic debut for the Blues' first team off the bench in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club named RC Strasbourg boss Rosenior, 41, to be their next manager following the exit of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls the London club.

There have been only 12 black head coaches – excluding individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in England's top flight since it began 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he grew up and played not far from here, he understands the local fans," added Canoville.

"When kids see a figure like Rosenior managing their club, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a family that fights for what's right… it is profound demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, it is a massive step for the club, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Does the Numbers Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' head coach in 1996 and became the top flight's first black manager.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English manager in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional current top flight boss from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game is matched by an absence of diversity at executive level.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, analysis by Kick It Out revealed only 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse communities.

At first-team coaching level, based on data from 11 clubs, the percentage stands at 2%.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to see more of that," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of ability that exists in the black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches want a chance to show their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to work hard to break those barriers down."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become one of only four full-time British managers presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's remaining big five leagues in terms of homegrown managers.

16 of the 20 top-flight managers in Serie A are Italian, Eleven of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve of the 18 in Germany while Ten in Ligue 1 in France.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure all young English coaches with a youth development pedigree will be, in some way regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It is truly motivating to young English coaches in the system to see someone land such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he will be really well."

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a five-month stint at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for his services in combating discrimination in football and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he followed a path in management. He started writing a column for The Guardian, where in 2017 he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that race does not determine coaching skill arguing that roles should be given based on qualification.

He also made the view he has often stated: how vast lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "emotional", noting that he could relate to the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to join him with a move from France to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" upon hearing a coach make a discriminatory remark. He pledged support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and authored an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "blatant" racism.

He has subsequently built his reputation in the dugout – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye at Strasbourg earlier this week before signing a long-term contract with the Blues.

Chelsea had the top flight's first black manager with Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
