A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the hours before former President Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other traders also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule introduced on Monday would prevent federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

The industry were examined under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
